The American Society of Magazine Editors has released its list of finalists for the 2013 National Magazine Awards—also known as the “Ellies” for the elephant-shaped statuette winners receive.

Condé Nast was, by far, the most-lauded publisher with a total of 26 nominations. Hearst and Time Inc. tied in second place with nine finalists each. Among single titles, National Geographic racked up the most nominations, with a total of seven nods. Bon Appétit and New York followed with six nominations each, while GQ and The New Yorker tied with five nominations apiece. First-time nominees included Mental Floss, Pitchfork, HGTV Magazine, Afar, Byliner and Bullett.

Twenty-five titles in five (newly modified) categories were nominated for General Excellence in Print awards.

In the news, sports and entertainment category, finalists were Esquire, Fortune, National Geographic, New York and Wired. Service and fashion nominees included Harper's Bazaar; O, The Oprah Magazine; Real Simple; Vogue; and Women's Health.

In the lifestyle category, nods went to Bon Appétit, House Beautiful, Martha Stewart Living, Saveur and Texas Monthly. Special-interest nominees were The Fader, Mental Floss, MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History, Outside and Scientific American.

And in the literary, political and professional magazines category, finalists included MIT Technology Review, The New Republic, The Paris Review, Poetry and Mother Jones (which also got a nod in the Video category for its “Full Secret Video of Private Romney Fundraiser”—otherwise known as the famous “47 Percent” speech).

For the first time, digital categories were included in the mix. (Until now, digital media had been separated into its own separate “Digital Ellies” ceremony.) Finalists for General Excellence in Digital Media included Chow, Glamour, National Geographic, Pitchfork and Slate, while best Tablet Magazine nominees included Bloomberg Businessweek, Bon Appétit, Esquire, Money and National Geographic. Other digital categories included Website, Multimedia and Video.

Finalists for ASME’s biggest award—Magazine of the Year—will be announced on April 8, and winners of this year’s National Magazine Awards will be revealed at a ceremony on May 2.

Here's the full list of finalists.
